Yeast Infection of the Esophagus Pathophysiology
Candida is a fungus. A fungus is a tiny, plant-like, living thing that normally grows on the surface of the skin, in the female vagina, and in the mouth. It is the most common type of fungus that causes esophagitis.
Normally, germs (bacteria) and fungus (Candida) exist together inside the mouth. The body system that fights infections is called the immune system. The immune system normally controls the growth of bacteria and fungi.
