A person with wheezing makes an abnormal whistling noise while exhaling, after taking a breath. The abnormal sound is created by air passing through narrowed passageways in the lungs.

Wheezing is a common symptom in those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It may also be seen in some cases of pneumonia and bronchitis.
