Physical findings in someone with a volvulus may include:

• Abdominal swelling
• Abdominal tenderness
• Vomiting material that contains bile
• Vomiting stool
• Unintentional weight loss
• Absent bowel sounds:
• While listening to the abdomen with a stethoscope.
• Fever

Tests are necessary to make the diagnosis of a volvulus.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a volvulus include:

• Amylase level
• Blood cultures
• Complete blood count
• Kidney profile
• Liver profile
• Urinalysis

Imaging tests that may be used to evaluate a volvulus include:

• Abdominal CT scan
• Abdominal x-rays
• Large intestine obstruction
• Small intestine obstruction
• Volvulus: twisting of the bowel
• Upper GI series
• Barium enema
• Colonoscopy
• Sigmoidoscopy
• Laparoscopy
