What is a volvulus?
A person with a volvulus has a loop of intestine that has become twisted, which obstructs the passage of food and fluid through the intestine. A volvulus also causes the blood vessels that supply the intestine to become twisted. This cuts off the blood supply to the loop of intestine, which results in death of the intestinal tissue. The cause for volvulus is unknown. However, volvulus is more common in those whose intestine developed abnormally in the womb. Images
