The evaluation of a ventral hernia begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with a ventral hernia may include:

• Bulge in the abdominal wall:
• May be tender
• Usually soft
• Abdominal tenderness

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of a ventral hernia.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a ventral hernia include:

• Complete blood count
• Abdominal x-rays
• Abdominal ultrasound
• CT scan of the abdomen
• Laparoscopy
