The evaluation of a varicocele begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with a varicocele may include:

• Enlarged scrotum
• Soft, swollen veins underneath the scrotal skin

Usually, tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of a varicocele.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a varicocele include:

• Semen analysis:
• In order to check for infertility
• Thermography
• Testicular ultrasound
• Urinalysis
