A woman with vaginal prolapse has weakness in the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus and vagina. This causes the walls of the vagina to fall from the normal position in the pelvis and into the vaginal opening. Images

When the bladder pushes the wall of vagina through the vaginal opening, it is called a cystocele.
