Vaginal bleeding is natural after delivery. Bleeding occurs from the inside of the uterus, where the placenta attached to the uterus. As the uterus contracts after delivery, the blood clots and the bleeding stops. As further contraction takes place in the first week after delivery, clotted blood is expelled from the inside of the uterus.

Causes of excessive vaginal bleeding after delivery include:

• Uterus contracts slowly
• Bleeding tissue from the pregnancy remains in the uterus
• Endometritis:
• Infection of tissue inside the uterus
