What is uterine prolapse?
A woman with uterine prolapse has weakness in the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus in the pelvis. The weakness allows the uterus to fall from its normal position in the pelvis, and slide into the vaginal canal. Eventually, the cervix protrudes from the vaginal opening. Uterine prolapse can be a normal result of aging, but it is more common in women who have had multiple pregnancies. About 1 out of 10 women experience uterine prolapse later in life. Images

What are the symptoms of uterine prolapse?
Symptoms of uterine prolapse include vaginal pain, vaginal discharge, vaginal swelling and vaginal itching. The cervix may protrude through the vaginal opening. Additional symptoms include abdominal pain, pain during urination, increased urinary frequency, and urinary incontinence.

How does the doctor treat uterine prolapse?
Treatment for uterine prolapse may include a device that is inserted into the vagina to help support the uterus, vaginal suspension surgery, or a hysterectomy.
