What is uterine prolapse?
A woman with uterine prolapse has weakness in the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus in the pelvis. The weakness allows the uterus to fall from its normal position in the pelvis, and slide into the vaginal canal. Eventually, the cervix protrudes from the vaginal opening. Uterine prolapse can be a normal result of aging, but it is more common in women who have had multiple pregnancies.
