Uterine Artery Embolization for Uterine Fibroids
During uterine artery embolization, medication is injected into the artery that supplies a uterine fibroid. The medication causes a clot to form in the artery that supplies the fibroid, which cuts off the blood supply to the fibroid. Without blood, the fibroid tissue dies and a scar forms in the wall of the uterus. Embolization destroys the fibroid, but does not damage the normal tissue in the uterus.
