A woman with uterine fibroids has non-cancerous tumors that form in the wall of the uterus. The cause of uterine fibroids is unknown. Uterine fibroids are stimulated to grow by the female hormone, estrogen.

About 20 percent of women over the age of 35 have uterine fibroids.
