A person with urinary urgency constantly has the urge to urinate. Depending on fluid intake, most people feel the urge to urinate every 4 to 6 hours. Causes of urinary urgency in men include prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, and prostatitis. Causes of urinary urgency in women include urinary tract infections, uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse, and urethral syndrome. Urinary urgency is more common in women than men.

What are the symptoms of urinary urgency?
Symptoms that occur with urinary urgency may include a sensation of bladder fullness, increased urinary frequency, urinary incontinence, pain during urination, blood in the urine, lower abdominal pain, low back pain, or flank pain.

How does the doctor treat urinary urgency?
The treatment for urinary urgency depends on the underlying cause. Treatment for urinary urgency may include medications that relax the bladder, or antibiotics for a urinary tract infection.
