A person with urinary retention is unable to empty the bladder completely. In some cases, the person may not be able to release any urine from the bladder. Urine builds-up in the bladder and the bladder becomes swollen, resulting in bladder swelling and pain.

An enlarged prostate gland in a man over 60 is a common cause for sudden urinary retention.
