The evaluation of upper respiratory infections begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with an upper respiratory infection may include:

• Swollen glands in the neck
• Fever
• Throat redness
• Runny nose
• Fluid behind the eardrums:
• During examination of the ear

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of upper respiratory infections. Testing may be required, in order to exclude other conditions that cause symptoms similar to an upper respiratory infection.

Tests that may be used to evaluate upper respiratory infections include:

• Complete blood count
• Throat culture
• Rapid strep screen
• Rapid influenza test
• Monospot blood test
• Sinus x-rays
• Chest x-ray
• Normal chest x-rays
• Pneumonia
