The evaluation of upper respiratory infections in children begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in upper respiratory infections in children may include:

• Swollen glands in the neck
• Fever
• Throat redness
• Runny nose
• Fluid behind the eardrums
• During examination of the ears

Testing is generally not required to diagnose upper respiratory infections in children. Testing may be required, in order to exclude other conditions that cause symptoms similar to an upper respiratory infection in children.

Tests for upper respiratory infections in children may include:

• Complete blood count
• Throat culture
• Rapid strep screen
• Rapid influenza test
• Monospot blood test
• Sinus x-rays
• Chest x-ray
• Normal chest x-rays
• Pneumonia
