What is hypoparathyroidism?
A person with hypoparathyroidism has an abnormally low level of parathyroid hormone in the bloodstream. Parathyroid hormone regulates calcium levels. Low levels of parathyroid hormone lead to low calcium levels in the bloodstream. Hypoparathyroidism may be inherited, or caused by removal of part of the parathyroid gland.

Symptoms of hypoparathyroidism include muscle spasms in the face and extremities, muscle tremor, abdominal cramps, palpitations, confusion, hallucinations, delusions, dry hair, brittle fingernails, cataracts, oral thrush, and fungal skin infections.
