A person with traumatic pneumothorax has air trapped in the space between the outside of the lung and the inside of the chest wall. The air enters the space when the lung is punctured during an injury. Images

A pneumothorax may occur spontaneously, or be due to a chest injury. Traumatic pneumothorax is most often caused by an injury to the chest that causes a rib fracture: the broken rib punctures the lung.
