What is toxoplasmosis?
A person with toxoplasmosis has an infection with a parasite, called Toxoplasma gondii. Most adults in the US have been infected with Toxoplasma gondii, but 70 percent of adults do not develop symptoms during the infection. Toxoplasmosis rarely causes symptoms in those who have normal immune systems. The infection causes illness in those who have a weak immune system. Congenital toxoplasmosis is an infection that occurs in a fetus. The parasite can enter the fetus if the mother is infected during pregnancy. Images

Initial symptoms of toxoplasmosis may include a fever, rash, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and swollen glands. Symptoms of severe toxoplasmosis include severe headache, neck pain and stiffness, vision loss, difficulty breathing, difficulty walking, difficulty speaking, and confusion. Images
