Torsion Testicle Overview

Another name for Torsion Testicle is Testicular Torsion.

What is testicular torsion?
In a male with a testicular torsion, the testicle has become dislodged from its normal position within the scrotum. The change in position twists the blood vessels that supply the testicle, cutting off the blood supply. The cause of testicular torsion is unknown. Testicular torsion is most common in males during adolescence. About 1 out of 160 males develop testicular torsion in the US each year.

What are the symptoms of testicular torsion?
Symptoms of testicular torsion include sudden, severe testicular pain, testicular swelling, testicular tenderness, redness of the skin over the scrotum, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

How does the doctor treat testicular torsion?
Treatment for testicular torsion may include manually rotating the testicle back into position. However, surgery is usually required to move the testicle back into position. Treatment may also include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications or narcotic medications for pain.
