Toe Tenderness Overview

What is toe tenderness?
A person with toe tenderness has pain when pressure is applied to the toe. Toe tenderness may be caused by an injury, infection, or inflammation. Common causes of toe tenderness may include a toe bruise, subungual hematoma, or paronychia.

What are the symptoms of toe tenderness?
Symptoms that occur with toe tenderness include toe pain, stiffness, swelling, and numbness. Additional symptoms may include skin redness or difficulty walking.

How does the doctor treat toe tenderness?
The treatment of toe tenderness depends on the underlying cause. Treatment for toe tenderness may include rest, cold compresses, elevation, wound care, a splint or protective shoe, crutches, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Additional treatment may include physical therapy, surgery, or antibiotics for a skin infection.
