Fungi are normally present on the skin. Tinea cruris is caused by overgrowth of the fungi on the skin in the groin.

Fungi that cause tinea cruris include:
  • Epidermophyton floccosum
  • Trichophyton mentagrophytes
  • Trichophyton rubrum
  • Trichophyton verrucosum
