What is Hashimoto's thyroiditis?
A person with Hashimoto's thyroiditis has inflammation of the thyroid gland. Hashimoto's thyroiditis results from an abnormal immune system, which normally fights infection. The immune system mistakenly attacks normal thyroid tissue, causing inflammation and destruction of the thyroid. The cause of the abnormal immune system in Hashimoto's thyroiditis is unknown. Hashimoto's thyroiditis causes enlargement of the thyroid gland and hypothyroidism.
