Home care for thyroid cancer includes:
Thyroid Self-Examination
  • Get a glass of water and a hand-held mirror.
  • Aim the mirror at the base of your neck, focusing on the area between the Adam's apple and the collarbones. The thyroid gland lies in this region of the neck, in front of the trachea.
  • Tip your head back slightly, and take a sip of water. As you swallow, watch your neck in the mirror. The cartilage rings of the trachea should be visible. Any bulges in the area below the Adam's apple may indicate an enlarged thyroid or thyroid nodule.
  • If a bulge or swelling is present, bring it to the attention of your primary care physician as soon as possible.
