The evaluation of thrombophlebitis begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with thrombophlebitis may include:

• A firm, tender vein under the skin
• Warmth and redness of the skin over the vein

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of thrombophlebitis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate thrombophlebitis may include:

• Complete blood count
• Coagulation profile
• Ultrasound of the vein
• Doppler ultrasound of the lower extremities
• D-dimer studies
