What is thrombophlebitis?

Thrombophlebitis occurs in about 1 out of every 1200 people who have an intravenous line. Images

Symptoms of thrombophlebitis include a firm, tender vein under the skin surface. Additional symptoms include redness and warmth to the skin that lies over the vein.

How does the doctor treat thrombophlebitis?
Treatment for thrombophlebitis may include rest, warm compresses to skin, elevation of the affected area, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Additional treatment for serious thrombophlebitis may include antibiotics and blood thinner medication. Images
