A person with thrombophlebitis has inflammation of a vein that lies beneath the skin. Usually, a clot also forms in the vein. Those who have had an intravenous (IV) line, and those with varicose veins, have the highest risk for thrombophlebitis. Symptoms of thrombophlebitis include a firm, tender vein under the skin surface. Additional symptoms include redness and warmth to the skin that lies over the vein.
