What is thrombophlebitis?
A person with thrombophlebitis has inflammation of a vein that lies beneath the skin. Usually, a clot also forms in the vein. Those who have had an intravenous (IV) line, and those with varicose veins, have the highest risk for thrombophlebitis. Thrombophlebitis occurs in about 1 out of every 1200 people who have an intravenous line.

What are the symptoms of thrombophlebitis?
Symptoms of thrombophlebitis include a firm, tender vein under the skin surface. Additional symptoms include redness and warmth to the skin that lies over the vein.

How does the doctor treat thrombophlebitis?
Treatment for thrombophlebitis may include rest, warm compresses to skin, elevation of the affected area, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Additional treatment for serious thrombophlebitis may include antibiotics and blood thinner medication.
