A person with thalassemia has an inherited disease that causes the body to produce abnormal hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen inside red blood cells. Images

Thalassemia results in anemia. Thalassemia occurs most commonly in blacks, or in individuals of Mediterranean or Southeast Asian ancestry.
