Tendon Rupture Patella Overview

Another name for Tendon Rupture Patella is Patellar Tendon Rupture.

What is patellar tendon rupture?
A person with patellar tendon rupture has torn the tendon that connects the kneecap to the tibia (shin). Causes of patellar tendon rupture include injuries and conditions that cause weakening of the patellar tendon, such as arthritis or tendinitis. A patellar tendon rupture is uncommon, but occurs most commonly in those who are less than 40 years old.

What are the symptoms of patellar tendon rupture?
Symptoms of patellar tendon rupture are similar to patellar tendinitis. Symptoms include knee pain that worsens while running, jumping, or climbing. Additional symptoms of patellar tendon rupture may include difficulty walking, knee swelling, and tenderness over the tendon. A complete tear through the patellar tendon will result in the inability to walk.

How does the doctor treat patellar tendon rupture?
The treatment for patellar tendon rupture includes rest, cold compresses, elevation, crutches, a knee splint, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Treatment for a severe patellar tendon rupture may include surgery to repair the patellar tendon.
