The evaluation of tendinitis begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with tendinitis may include:

• Swelling over a tendon
• Tenderness over a tendon
• Redness over a tendon
• Pain with movement

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of tendinitis. Test may be required to evaluate conditions that cause symptoms similar to tendinitis.

Tests that may be used to evaluate tendinitis include:

• Extremity x-rays to look for bone or joint abnormalities
• Extremity ultrasound
• MRI scan
