What is tendinitis?
A person with tendinitis has an inflamed, irritated tendon. The tendons are strong fibrous bands that connect the muscles to bone. In most cases, tendinitis is triggered by overuse or injury. Tendinitis may occur around any of the large joints, but it is most common in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and heel. Images

What are the symptoms of tendinitis?
Symptoms of tendinitis include pain, tenderness, and swelling around a tendon. The pain worsens with movement. The skin over the tendon may also become red and warm. Images

How does the doctor treat tendinitis?
Treatment for tendinitis may include rest, cold compresses, a splint or cast, stretching exercises, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Additional treatment may include an injection of corticosteroid medication around the tendon.
