A person with streptococcal tonsillitis has an inflammation of the tonsils, caused by an infection with the bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae. The bacteria invade the tonsils in the back of the throat, resulting in inflammation and pain. Almost all children in the US experience one or more episodes of tonsillitis.

What are the symptoms of streptococcal tonsillitis?
The most common symptoms of streptococcal tonsillitis include a severe sore throat, throat redness, and swollen tonsils. Pus may be present on the surface of the tonsils. Additional symptoms of streptococcal tonsillitis include difficulty swallowing, headache, fatigue, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

How does the doctor treat streptococcal tonsillitis?
Treatment for streptococcal tonsillitis may include rest, plenty of liquids, throat lozenges, antibiotics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever. Surgery may be required in those or children who have more than 6 episodes of streptococcal tonsillitis in one year.
