A person with viral gastroenteritis has inflammation of the stomach and intestines, caused by a viral infection. Viral gastroenteritis is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in adults and children. About 3.5 million infants develop viral gastroenteritis each year in the US. Viral gastroenteritis usually resolves within 10 days.

What are the symptoms of viral gastroenteritis?
Symptoms of viral gastroenteritis include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mild abdominal pain, fever, and muscle aches.

How does the doctor treat viral gastroenteritis?
Treatment for viral gastroenteritis may include a clear liquid diet, medications for diarrhea, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever.
