A person with a statin myopathy has inflammation of the muscles, caused by statin medications. The muscle inflammation is a side effect of statin medications.

Statin medications are used to treat high cholesterol. The most severe form of statin myopathy is called rhabdomyolysis.

About 1 out of 10 people who take statin medications develop muscle inflammation. Only about 6 out of 100,000 people treated with statin medication for a year, develop rhabdomyolysis.
