A person with staphylococcus pneumonia has inflammation and swelling of the lung, caused by an infection with the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. The inflammation causes fluid to collect in the lung, which can prevent oxygen from entering the bloodstream. Those with influenza are at risk for developing bacterial pneumonia. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia in those with influenza.
