Sprue Underlying Cause
In a person with celiac sprue, the immune system, which normally fights infection, mistakenly attacks gluten in the small intestine. The reaction causes the intestine to become inflamed and swollen. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, oats, barley, and other hybrid grains. The intestinal lining becomes damaged and cannot absorb nutrients properly, resulting in malabsorption.
