A person with a splenic abscess has an abnormal collection of pus inside the spleen, caused by a bacterial infection. Most cases of splenic abscess are caused by bacteria present in the bloodstream: the bacteria settle in the spleen, causing an infection that leads to an abscess. This rare condition is most common in those who have poorly functioning immune systems.
