What is a spermatocele?
A male with a spermatocele has a lump in the scrotum, caused by a cyst that forms in the epididymis. The cyst is a collection of fluid that contains dead sperm cells. The cause of spermatocele is unknown. Spermatoceles are common: about 30 percent of men who undergo ultrasound of the scrotum have a spermatocele.

Symptoms of a spermatocele include a lump in the scrotum, mild scrotum pain, and scrotum swelling.

How does the doctor treat a spermatocele?
Small, painless spermatoceles do not require treatment. Surgery may be required to remove large spermatoceles.
