What is snoring?
A person who snores makes loud noises while breathing during sleep. The sound is caused by the vibration of the soft tissues in the back of the throat, as air passes through the upper airway. Conditions that increase the risk of snoring include obesity, allergic rhinitis, deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, and alcohol use. Usually, snoring is harmless. In rare cases, snoring is a symptom of a sleep disorder, called sleep apnea.

Symptoms that may occur with snoring include difficulty sleeping and excessive sleepiness during the day.

Treatment for snoring may include weight loss, avoiding alcohol, and dental appliances that keep the airway open.
