What is sialadenitis?
A person with sialadenitis has a bacterial infection of a salivary gland. Sialadenitis occurs most commonly in one of the parotid glands or one of the submandibular glands. The parotid gland is located at the angle of the jaw, while the submandibular gland is located below the jaw.

What are the symptoms of sialadenitis?
Symptoms of sialadenitis include facial pain or jaw pain at the angle of the jaw, or below the jaw. Additional symptoms of sialadenitis include tenderness and swelling over the salivary glands.

How does the doctor treat sialadenitis?
Treatment for sialadenitis includes antibiotics, and acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain and fever. Severe infections may require surgery.
