What is shoulder pain?
A person with shoulder pain has discomfort in one of the structures of the shoulder. The most common causes of shoulder pain are shoulder injury and overuse. Shoulder pain may also be caused by inflammation or infection.

Symptoms that occur with shoulder pain include shoulder swelling, bruising, stiffness, or tenderness of the shoulder. Additional symptoms may include arm swelling, arm weakness, arm numbness, or a deformed shoulder. Images

How does the doctor treat shoulder pain?
Initial treatment for shoulder pain may include rest, a sling, cold compresses, physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, or narcotic pain medications. Additional treatment for shoulder pain may include corticosteroid medication injections or surgery.
