Shoulder Dislocation Definition

A person with shoulder dislocation has abnormal alignment of the humerus and the scapula at the shoulder joint. The humerus separates from its normal position against the scapula.

There are two types of shoulder dislocation:
  • Anterior shoulder dislocation: Images
    • The humerus lies in front of the scapula.
    • This is the most common type of shoulder dislocation, accounting for about 95% of all shoulder dislocations
  • Posterior shoulder dislocation:
    • The humerus lies behind the scapula.
    • This dislocation is uncommon.
