The evaluation of shin splints begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with shin splints may include:

• Leg tenderness:
• Over the front of the tibia
• Leg swelling:
• Over the front of the tibia

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of shin splints.

Tests that may be used to evaluate shin splints include:

• Extremity x-rays:
• Bone x-rays of the tibia
• Bone scan of the tibia
