What is a shigella infection?
A person with a shigella infection has an inflammation of the intestine, caused by Shigella bacteria. The bacteria invade the cells that line the intestine, and may cause the inner lining to bleed. Most infections occur after ingesting food or water that is contaminated with the bacteria. About 15,000 people develop a shigella infection each year in the US. Images
