A person with a shigella infection has an inflammation of the intestine, caused by Shigella bacteria. Images

Most infections occur after ingesting food or water that is contaminated with the bacteria. Shigella infections are completely cured with antibiotics. Symptoms may continue for 1-2 weeks after treatment.
