Seabather's Eruption Underlying Cause
Seabather's eruption is caused by tiny jellyfish larvae in seawater. The larvae become trapped against the skin beneath a swimsuit. Jellyfish toxin may play a role in causing the skin irritation.
Parasites include the larvae of the following marine organisms:
- Thimble jellyfish
- Man-of-war jellyfish
Larvae are immature off spring that are released into the water by these organisms. The larvae are more prominent in warm water. The larvae die and the rash slowly improves with time, but may take several weeks.
