Schizophrenia can take many different forms. Some people have constant symptoms, while others have episodes of symptoms, separated by periods of normal functioning. Those who develop schizophrenia later in life are more likely to suffer disability.

The types of schizophrenia include:

• Catatonic schizophrenia:
• Causes physical symptoms, such as immobility, abnormal motion, or unusual posture
• Disorganized schizophrenia:
• Highly disorganized thoughts and behaviors
• Paranoid schizophrenia:
• Characterized by delusions of persecution and paranoia
• Residual schizophrenia:
• Symptoms are mild
• Undifferentiated schizophrenia:
• Symptoms are difficult to define into one of the other groups
