The evaluation of sacrococcygeal injury begins with a history and physical exam.

Physical findings in someone with sacrococcygeal injury may include:

• Bruising above the buttocks
• Swelling above the buttocks
• Tenderness above the buttocks

Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of sacrococcygeal injury.

Tests that may be used to evaluate a sacrococcygeal injury include:

• X-rays of the sacrum and pelvis
• Lumbar spine x-rays
• CT scan of the pelvis
• MRI scan of the pelvis
