Rib Fracture Anatomy
To better understand rib fracture, it helps to understand the anatomy of the chest and ribs.

Each of the twelve vertebrae of the thoracic spine have a rib that forms part of the thorax, or chest. Most of the ribs attach to the sternum in the front of the chest. The ribcage protects the organs inside the chest and provides space for the lungs.
