  • Rhabdomyolysis
A person with rhabdomyolysis has destruction of muscle fibers. The destroyed muscle fibers release large amounts of myoglobin into the bloodstream. Normally, myoglobin carries oxygen in the muscle cells. When it is present in the bloodstream, myoglobin is toxic to the kidneys. Rhabdomyolysis usually causes muscle pain and muscle swelling.
