Redness of the Umbilical Cord Evaluation
The evaluation of an umbilical cord infection begins with a history and physical exam. ![]()
Physical findings in an infant with an umbilical cord infection may include:
- Swelling around the cord
- Skin redness around the cord
- Pus draining from the cord
- Fever

- Tenderness around the cord
Tests are not necessary to make the diagnosis of an umbilical cord infection.
Tests that may be used to evaluate an umbilical cord infection include:
- Bacterial cultures from the cord site
- Complete blood count
