Reaction to Peanuts Prevention
Prevention of peanut allergies includes:
- Avoid peanuts and peanut oil.
- Ask about ingredients when eating out.
- Read food labels carefully.
- Take prescribed medications as directed.
- Take a nonprescription antihistamine for allergic symptoms:
- Carry an epinephrine syringe:
- Learn to use the syringe for severe allergic reactions.
- Wear an alert bracelet or tag that identifies your allergies.
- Tell your friends and colleagues that you have a peanut allergy.
Foods that are at high risk for containing peanut proteins include:
- Baked goods, such as cookies and pastries
- Cereals and granola
- Cultural foods
- Energy bars
- Foods that contain arachis oil
- Grain breads
- Ground or mixed nuts
- Ice cream and frozen desserts
- Peanut butter
- Peanut flour
- Salad dressing
