A person with rabies has a viral infection of the brain and spinal cord, caused by a bite from an infected animal. Images

Rodents, such as squirrels, chipmunks, rats, mice, rabbits, and hares, do not carry rabies.
Animals that carry rabies include:

  • Dogs
  • Foxes
  • Raccoons
  • Skunks
  • Woodchuck
